Nineteen

HENRY

The wind whips across my face and through my hair. Dirt and sand splatter against me, pelting my goggles and stinging the exposed skin of my neck and arms. This has never been my thing. Nor Jasper’s. We’re more chill out over a couple of beers and watch the game guys. But Keith and Gus live for this shit.

The adrenaline rush.

No matter how busy our schedules are or how exhausted we might be, they always seem to plan something that puts all of our lives in danger and drag us eagerly toward it.

I kick up some speed on my ATV, the ocean a blue blur on my right, the forest a green boundary on my left, as I get myself up and over a sand dune only to break quickly on the other side, sand shooting from my tires in all directions, so I don’t crash into Keith who is closer than I anticipated. I catch his head falling back in a bellowing laugh and he points a finger at me, loving this way too much and knowing I don’t.

“That wasn’t cool, fucker,” I yell at him, my voice getting caught in the breeze.

He grins like a sadistic devil, revving his ATV up so he can fly over the next dune, spinning around and doing tricks before he comes to a stop at the top. I follow him up and over, Gus and Jasper already there, standing beside their ATVs with their helmets and goggles off, laughing and shooting the shit. We woke up just a little after dawn and made our way out here. Considering what little sleep I’ve had lately between recording and a blue-haired siren, I’m particularly dragging ass today.

Braking the ATV, I power it down, handing it over to the guy running this show for us along with my helmet and goggles. Rough grains of dirt and sand meet my hand as I wipe at my face. The sun is beaming down on us, the waves crashing against the rocky shore below and I join my friends who are taking a moment to appreciate it.

“That was fun as hell.” Keith slaps my back, squeezing my shoulder and giving me a small shake. A smile of pure contentment perks up his face while causing mine to frown. What am I doing? Why am I risking this? Not just my friendship, but this life, these guys, our band.

I look over at him, the words on my tongue, but I can’t force them out. I feel like a coward. Like a real man would own up to the shit he’s involved in with his best friend’s little sister. And no matter how much fun I’m having, despite how much I don’t want to, I need to stop sleeping with Eden. It’s the only way I won’t break her heart and lose everything at the same time.

I’ve spent a week tracking her movements.

Thinking about her. Obsessing over her. Dreaming of her.

Staring at her while being grateful for the invention of reflective sunglasses so no one is privy to my creeping except her.
